Justification

Justification

Malawi for a number of years has been training teachers at certificate level. However, it has been observed in recent years that the outcomes have been undesirable when compared to other countries in the SADC region. It has been observed further that Malawi is the only country in SADC region that still offers certificate in primary school teaching as its highest qualification for primary school teachers. This has compelled the Government through the Ministry of Education Science and Technology to upgrade the qualification of teachers to Diploma and Degree level. It is believed that when this will be fully implemented, it will enhance teacher welfare and development, and this may attract candidates to the teaching profession. Additionally raising the primary school teacher qualification to a diploma and degree level will lead to improved teacher motivation, performance and professionalism, with knock-on effects for improved teaching and learning outcome
